Description

Sandhill Organic Wild Rice contains 7 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber with no concern of arcenic. It has a delicious robust nutty flavor which cooks in 20 -25 minutes or 12 minutes in an Instapot. Sandhill Wild Rice is California Grown, CCOF and Kosher Certified, and naturally gluten-free.

A multi-generational family farm and ranch, Alturas Ranches is beautifully situated in Northern California, surrounded by preserved wildlife habitat.  Alturas Ranches’ primary focus is on the health of the land, thus producing wild rice of high quality. They have established, converted, and continue to develop fields of conventionally farmed ground into organic farmland. Wild rice is the seed of a semi-aquatic grass that’s native to North America. The black grains are long and slender and cook to a chewy texture with a pronounced nutty, earthy flavor.

Cooking Suggestions

Wild rice is not actually rice and therefore does not cook like regular rice. Instead, boil it in plenty of water just like you would pasta. When it’s done to your liking, drain any excess water.

Basic Cooking Instructions:

Rinse thoroughly with cold water and drain. Bring 3 1/2 cups water or stock to a boil. Add a pinch of salt. Stir in 1 cup uncooked Wild Rice, reduce heat and simmer, covered 20-25 minutes or just until kernels puff open. Uncover and fluff with a fork and simmer an additional 5 minutes. Drain off any excess liquid and serve. Yields 3 to 4 cups.

Instapot Cooking Instructions:

Rinse thoroughly with cold water and drain. Add 2 1/2 cups liquid and 1 cup rinsed rice to Instapot. Cook on high pressure for 11 minutes for an al dente texture, 12 minutes for a softer texture. Quick-release, drain excess liquid and serve.

Instead of water, the following can be substituted:

  • chicken, beef, or vegetable broth
  • bone broth
  • miso broth
  • cinnamon and clove added to salted water

Serving Suggestions

This wild rice is great for all meals. Serve it warm or cold, with your favorite fruits, nuts or milk for a delicious nutritious breakfast or snack. Replace the oats in your cookie, pancake or bread recipes. Stir in to your favorite soups and stews. It is a great side for meats, seafood or wild game.

Storage Suggestions

Keep dry wild rice in an airtight container in a dark, cool spot like a pantry or cupboard. This ingredient will keep for years as long as it doesn’t get wet. Store cooked wild rice in a closed container in the fridge for up to a week. Freeze cooked wild rice in an airtight container for up to six months.

ABOUT SANDHILL WILD RICE

Sandhill Wild Rice is named for the migratory Sandhill Cranes which make their habitat in our paddies. We pride ourselves on our organic practices which, amongst other more obvious benefits, further the health and wellbeing of these beautiful birds. The crane, in Chinese and Japanese culture, is a symbol for longevity, peace, and good-fortune: all of which are promoted through the consumption of this native superfood.
