Buzzee Founder Pushpa Santhosh and her family moved from India to the USA in 2011. As a mother of a 2-year-old, she truly enjoyed being in a new country and sharing many new delights and discoveries with her young child. Even though her daughter kept her very busy, she continued to have the urge to do more. She wanted to work; specifically, she had an excellent idea for a small business and applied for a work permit but had to wait five years to get one finally. When that day came, Pushpa was thrilled! She could no longer wait to start her dream of owning a small business in the USA.
While waiting for her work permit, she noticed a large amount of waste coming out of her kitchen in the form of empty packages, used cling wraps, milk cartons, leftovers/takeout boxes, and more. All of which was much higher in volume when compared to the amount of food packaging waste she used to back home.
Pushpa developed a product utilizing her family’s cotton, which her father has been weaving in India for over 40 years. When she took the idea of making reusable beeswax wraps to her parents, they were very generous and offered her the family fabric and their factory to get her business rolling. Her parents made the wraps themselves with the help of a team of 11 first-generation college graduates in their neighborhood.
The most fun part of the business for the family is that they include Pushpa’s daughter’s drawings in all fabric patterns! She is a great artist and loves drawing beautiful designs for Buzzee.
The Buzzee team pours their hearts and souls into each wrap and is very proud to stand where they are now! Buzzee wraps can be found in approximately 500 small mom-and-pop shops all across the USA, and their use has eliminated more than 130 million single-use plastics from ending up in a landfill.
