About Marieke Gouda

Marieke Gouda is a renowned cheese producer based in Thorp, Wisconsin, celebrated for its authentic Dutch Gouda crafted using traditional methods. Founded by Marieke Penterman, who emigrated from the Netherlands in 2003, the company has seamlessly blended Old World cheesemaking techniques with the rich dairy heritage of Wisconsin. Marieke’s journey into cheesemaking began with a longing for the Gouda of her homeland, leading her to obtain a Wisconsin cheesemaker’s license and refine her skills under Dutch mentors. In November 2006, she produced her first batch of Gouda, marking the inception of a legacy that would earn over 270 national and international awards. Marieke’s commitment to quality and authenticity was further recognized when she became a certified Master Cheesemaker, making her only the fourth woman to earn this prestigious title in Wisconsin.

The company’s offerings are diverse, featuring more than 24 different Gouda varieties. These include traditional-aged Goudas and innovative flavors such as Bacon and Fenugreek, both of which have garnered accolades at the American Cheese Society Awards.

Marieke Gouda’s cheeses are made from the milk of their own dairy cows, ensuring unparalleled freshness and quality. The milk is piped directly from the day’s first milking into the processing vat, where it is transformed into cheese using equipment, cultures, herbs, and spices imported from Holland. The curds are hand-packed into forms, pressed, brined for 60 hours, and then aged on Dutch pine planks, allowing the flavors to develop fully.

Visitors to the Marieke Gouda farm can immerse themselves in the cheesemaking process through guided tours, offering a firsthand look at the dedication and craftsmanship involved. The on-site store and Café Dutchess provide an opportunity to sample and purchase their award-winning cheeses and enjoy Gouda-inspired dishes.

Through unwavering dedication to traditional methods and a passion for innovation, Marieke Gouda has established itself as a beacon of excellence in the American cheese industry, bringing the rich flavors of Dutch Gouda to cheese enthusiasts nationwide.
