The history of Saint Patrick’s Day as an official United States holiday dates back to the 1900s. However, it was celebrated as a national feast day in Ireland as early as the 10th century. Saint Patrick, the most famous patron saint of Ireland, is remembered as the missionary who brought Christianity to Ireland who used the leaves of shamrocks to teach the doctrine of the holy trinity.
