Mother’s day is all about showing the mother figure in your life just how much you appreciate all that she has done, and still does, for you. She deserves to be spoiled. The holiday is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world, though usually in the months of March or May.
The modern US celebration of Mother’s Day began in the early 20th century and was started by a woman named Anna Jarvis. Following her mother’s, Ann Reeves Jarvis, death, who had created “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” in the late 1860s to promote better child-rearing and promote a mothering community, to honor the sacrifices mothers make for their children. The US made it an official holiday in 1914. Over time the holiday would shift from large public festivals and gatherings to children presenting their mothers with modest gifts of flowers, treats, and cards. This, of course, is only one of the more recent versions of Mother’s Day. Celebrations of mothers can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who both held large festivals in honor of their “mother goddesses” – Rhea and Cybele.
