Buttermilk Bread

This is honestly the most delicious, soft, amazing white bread. I make this loaf at least once a week and it might last 2 days if I am lucky… or if we slice it thin enough. Usually half is gone before it is even cool enough to really cut nicely.

The bread fills the house with the amazing smell of fresh buttered bread while it bakes. It comes out soft and light and pillowy… every single time.

It makes a fabulous sandwich bread, a great garlic bread base, or just a simple piece of toast smeared with even more butter and fresh jam… mmm….

On to the how-to!

Start by gathering all of your ingredients and kitchen tools.

Kitchen tools you will need:

  • A bread machine
  • A microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup

Ingredients you will need:

  • 1-1/4 c buttermilk, warmed
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 3 c all purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp yeast

What you will need to do:

Gather all of your ingredients.

Once you have everything ready, put all of the dry ingredients (except the yeast) into the bread machine.

I warm the buttermilk for less than 1 minute on high in the microwave. You don’t want it too hot, just warmer than room temperature. The butter can either be at room temperature or you can toss it in the microwave for a few seconds until it starts to melt a bit.

Add the warmed buttermilk and softened butter to the dry ingredients in the bread machine.

Add the yeast last and then immediately start the bread machine. Set the machine for a 2 pound loaf with a light crust.

Let the machine run its course and immediately remove the bread from the machine once the machine has finished baking it. You want to also remove it from the pan immediately. Set it out to cool to room temperature, slice, and enjoy! Store any uneaten slices in an air-tight container.

Notes

1.) This recipe makes one 2-lb. loaf in the bread machine. I suggest using the lightest crust setting.
2.) You can also bake this bread in the oven and simply use your bread machine on the dough cycle to create the dough. The dough makes fantastic dinner rolls. Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes.
